CryptOS is a geo-spacial AR application based around hacking and cyber infiltration.
The application won $150k from Niantic's Beyond Reality Developer Contest and resulted in Niantic acquiring the Escality team.
In CryptOS, you are recruited into a hacker organization to solve cryptographic and cyber security puzzles. In the process of doing so, you uncover a mysterious world of cybercrime, technological control, and societal surveillance.
App Features
Building Visualization
Using map data, we construct the 3D model of a building in Augmented Reality and overlay objectives on top of it. We display where the player is located as well as objectives that they need to hack into.
Hacking and Infiltrating The Building
From the above visualization, we take the experience in 2 directions. The experience is co-op, so we will have 1 user hack into the computer network, and 1 player hack into the security cameras.
The computer hacking player is tasked with finding crucial information inside the computer - looking through files and applications for data.
The security camera hacking player is tasked with using the camera system to spy on the physical space of the building and look for information that was not properly secured.
Hacking Subnets
At points of interest on the map, players can attempt to hack into the locations wireless systems. We visualize all connected devices in the network to the player and give the player a set of tools and puzzles to solve.
The player can then hack into the personal accounts of each of the devices in the network to gain information.
Hacking People
On the map level, we present the player with targets to hack. These targets, shown as people on the map, travel throughout the streets and parks. Its up to the player to catch up to them and initiate the hack and steal botnet resources.
